Paper Mill, Roslyn. Authorâs photo.
Washington described in his diary of the work at the âGrist and two Paper Millsâ as being carried on âwith spirit and profit.â âThe 1773 Paper Mill was established by Hendrick Onderdonk. It was the first paper mill in New York State and one of the first in the Colonies. Paper manufacturing had been suppressed in the Colonial era and import duties were high.â179 Paper was at first made from rags, and papermaking was a very profitable business. It is believed that this mill of Onderdonkâs operated throughout the Revolutionary War. By the time President George Washington visited the owner, Hendrick Onderdonck, in 1790, there were two paper mills being operated by the man.180
